Thing 23: Thoughts on 23 things

When the opportunity came to do 23 things I just couldn't figure out how I would get it done in only 9 weeks. I have so much to do here at work and at home and no extra time to spare. I've managed to work it in, both here and at home. I'm glad we have the extra time because there were a few weeks that I couldn't work with this at all.
I"m not too good with technology and know even less. This was a good experience as I was able to work at my pace and had help from friends and coworkers when I couldn't seem to get the hang of anything. There are alot of interesting sites that I will go back to and have given to my boys thinking they might enjoy them.
Information nowadays is available in the blink of an eye, 24/7. Sometimes I feel like a kid in one of those old fashioned candy stores that I remember so well. So much to pick from, but what do I really want. With the internet it's the same basic question-- So much to pick from but where exactly to go for the most abundant and correct information. That is where I think future librarians will become more of an information navigator than a director of information. They will need to know the best specific information sites instead of every site with little information. As time goes on, I'm sure the best sites will remain but there will always be the fly by night, maybe make a buck sites always popping up.

Thing 22: Learn about audiobooks

I explored Project Gutenberg. I'm amazed at all the titles that are available-free. Quite a selection of books being done by volunteers -- finding qualified books, reading them, proofreading, etc.
I don't really enjoy listening to books. I've tried listening to some talking book titles that we have here at the library during my long, and I do mean long, (ca. 1 hr., 20 min. each way) drive to work and home again . Even though the drive is getting longer and longer because of increased traffic, I find that while driving I prefer hearing the traffic updates, and live voices. I've tried listening at other times and just can't get into the swing of things. My oldest son has recently become very much interested, so I've given these sites to him as well as encouraging him to come check out our selections here at the library.
In the future I may try again.

Thing 21: Podcasts

I searched using Podcast.net and found searching tools easy to use. I decided to search Biltmore and had quite a few results and added this to my blogline.
Podcast is yet another way to get information and we may be using it quite a bit of in the future.

Thing 20: YouTube

Again, there are so many videos to choose from. After looking at a few I decided to view one from a Dom Famularo. He recently had a drum clinic at a Westminster music store that my sons and husband went to. Joe is learning to play the drums and all three of them were impressed with Doms playing. As I am after viewing his videos.

Thing 19: Web 2.0 Awards

I enjoyed looking at many of the awards winners and nominees. A few of the winners we have already learned about during this 23 thing training. I have also found Biblio, a used book site, and Medstory, a health site, and the real estate guide informative and interesting. And I know my boys would enjoy Flickr and and any of the game sites.

Thing 18 Google Docs

After opening an account in Google docs, I just typed a recipe and put in a folder. This may be a good way for family members to keep handy those handed down recipes and insert notes about their personal changes to the basic recipe and not be concerned about sending the changes to whoever or about losing the recipe.

Thing 16 and 17: Wikis

I'm familiar with Wikipedia. I'm not too thrilled that anyone can edit a wiki with possible incorrect information and that it is open to vandalism and spam. But I do think it would be good for booklists and maybe procedure updates for work.

Here is my wiki:

Thing 14: Technorati and Thing 15: Web 2.0

When I searched by keyword, the result was 6319 blog posts. Searching tags results in fewer blogs, only 624. Exploring the directory was interesting. Such a variety of information from so many people. I'm impressed if the blogs popping up every 5-7 seconds were new to each tag.
I read Away from the icebergs by Rich Anderson and To a temporary place in time by Wendy Schultz. The role of libraries and librarians have certainly changed a great deal since I started work for HCL 30 years ago. Books, plenty of books, was the main focus. Technology has changed the main focus from getting the information, sometimes dated, from books. It has opened up a world of endless information that is constantly being changed and updated. Librarians need to "go with the flow" to keep relevant.

Thing 13: Del.icio.us

Ok, I find that I am overwhelmed with any and all information at this point.
Odd name for social information site. I still consider a piece of cake delicious!!

Thing 12: Rollyo

I added a few sites that I liked and did some searching to add a couple more. I find that searching is fast, easy and I'm pleased with the results.
I expect to be doing more searches and adding more sites as I find them.

Thing 11: LibraryThing

Setting up my account was easy and I found LibraryThing easy to use. I have 2 main interests, cooking and antiques, and I like the fact that I can pull up so many titles of each and some I had not known about.
Just view http://www.librarything.com/catalog/greenmhclibrary to see a few.

Thing 10

I used Meez and liked the variety of options for creating my ice skater. I'll be playing around with this in the future when time permits.

Things 8 and 9

I've set up my RSS feed I am surprised at how many there are . I've subscribed to several RSS feeds about animals and nature that interest me. I am quite surprised at how quickly I've received feeds. And how many in so short a time! So many that I feel a little overwhelmed. Even if I had nothing to do but read feeds all day, I'm sure I wouldn't be able to read all that are sent. I 'm glad that I can revise and narrow things down a bit to suit me better. But this all takes time, time and more time.

I found Merlin interesting. I'm sure I'll be using it in the future.

Thing 7: blog post about anything technology

There is so much to pick to talk about.
I have 4 boys. Bill is now 34, Anthony is 30 and Jon and Joe are twins at 14. I also have 2 granchildren.
Technology really took off when Bill was about 10 and Anthony 6. They received a Nintendo game station for Christmas. But the system was rather large by todays standards, attached to the TV, and had to sit on a shelf close to the TV so that the cords would reach between the two. And the games were about 5 inches square and inserted into the system. They enjoyed this gaming system even though they had to sit close to the TV because the controls wouldn't reach far.
Jon and Joe each got gamesboys as about age 7. These gameboys are hand held, the games were much smaller and these handheld systems could be played anywhere, anytime. JnJ wanted to know if Bill and Anthony like their gamboys and did they beat so 'n so in a particular game. They were floored to find out they Bill and Anthony had nothing like this and that technology has come so far in about 20 years.
Now there are such a variety of systems, each with their own games. There are several generations of gameboy. Each with their own set of games. First was Gameboy, then gameboy color, then gameboy DS . I don't pay attention anymore. My grandson wants a particular game, but can't get it because he doesn't have the next generation gameboy. . He just has a plain old 2nd generation gameboy color. Playstation has its own games. Gamebox has its on games and never the two shall meet. But you can buy separate systems, continually if you want. And then you're talking mega bucks. It's a shame that there are no universal games that could be played either on Playstation, Gamebox, etc. interchangeably.
Technology changes so fast that it's pretty hard keeping up.

Thing 6: Mashups

I decided to look into retrievr. While in this site

I drew straight line with the colors blue and red and received many pictures. I thought this picture was interesting:

Thing 5: explore Flickr

I'm hoping to visit Alaska someday so decided to search Alaska on Flickr. After looking at many photos, I decided I like this scenic one at Cook's Inlet.

Thing 1 and 2 and 3

Lifelong learners, an interesting point. Many years ago, in the old days, when we had to walk 20 miles to school in 10 feet of snow, my grandmother told me that you will never stop learning as long as you live. She has been proven right, I am a lifelong learner, now it just takes me a little longer to comprehend, store and retrieve all that information.
It's been interesting getting to this point. With the help of Holly I finally made it.
